Backing up your data

Settings → Data.

This is about your data. To pass on only the structure of a semester, use Share a semester as a template.

• Export backup — writes a JSON file holding everything: semesters with their deadlines and breaks, courses with their checklist, series, sessions, deadlines, ratings and settings. On the device this goes through the share sheet; in the browser it is a download.
• Import backup — reads such a file back in. A backup from an older version is converted on the way in — just as the update converts your data (see below). A backup from 5.x ends up in the Studies area.

Since 6.0 the backup contains all learning areas.

Careful: importing replaces what is there; it does not merge. StudyNow asks before it does.

Reset everything deletes all data irreversibly.

Since StudyNow keeps nothing on a server, a backup is your only protection against losing the device — and at the same time the way onto a new one.

What the update to 6.0 changes

• All existing semesters move into the Studies learning area. Identifiers, ratings and achievements stay as they were.
• Before converting, StudyNow makes a safety copy of the database. If that fails — for example because storage is full — the app does not convert but says so and offers Try again. Free up space and try once more. Only as a last resort is there Update without a copy; export a backup first.

What the update to 4.0 changes

• Sessions with a participation set count as completed; sessions with only scales stay open and appear in the catch-up list.
• An exam takes its result from its previous participation: absent becomes “not taken”, anything else “taken”.
• Deadlines get the state of their type: “done” means “done and submitted” for submissions and “registered” for registrations. Done deadlines count as completed.
• Dimensions you had switched off are back; logged values are kept.
