Tasks and deadlines
Tasks belong to the course, not to a session — a deadline rarely coincides with a class.
On a course page: Add task / deadline, single or as a series — weekly problem sheets, say.
Which state a deadline can take depends on its deadline type (see Sessions and deadlines): a submission also knows “In progress” and the cases that did not work out — done but not submitted, or not submitted at all. You set the full state on the deadline's page; in the course's list and in the calendar a tap on the icon advances it:
Open → In progress → Submitted → Open
Deadline types without “In progress” jump straight to the tick. If the deadline has another final state, such as “Not submitted”, the tap resets it to open.
“In progress” is not decoration: having started is different from not having begun.
Deadline passed and it did not work out? Set Not submitted or missed and complete it with Done — the deadline then leaves the open lists instead of counting as “not finished yet” forever. You change it later via Edit, for instance if you did submit and only forgot to log it.
Deadlines without a final state that have passed are marked overdue in red. The due date itself does not count yet — if you have to hand in today, you still have the whole day.
